25.1.11
- Decide that it's time to make a pretty drastic change in your kiddo's life. What you're doing just isn't working anymore for anyone and you are very tired of feeling mad/frustrated/annoyed/desperate...you are ready to take matters in your own hands for a while.
- Break the news to friends and family that you are now going to home school. Be prepared for very mixed reactions, but for the most part enjoy the love and support people give you.
- Go to the school and officially withdraw your kiddo. Be prepared for tears and hugs and lots of love. Our elementary school is awesome! I am very grateful for the way they have supported us in this decision.
- Serf the internet for hours and hours trying to figure out what kind of program you want to set up for your kiddo. It's all you now....you are the URP (ultimately responsible person) so you gotta make it work for you, your kiddo and all the other folk that will be affected by this. This is a TOUGH process. No easy answers and the stakes are kinda high. But there are tons of things out there and you will eventually find the one that works for you.
- Submit all the paper work for an online charter school that sounds perfect. Be prepared to run to 344 different locations to get everything in order and fill out about 233 different forms only to be told that the school is actually full and you are out of luck. Better luck next year!
- Cry for a bit.
- Ponder. Regroup. Get back to work.
- Learn that charter schools everywhere are currently enrolling for the upcoming school year and if you want a snowball's chance of your kiddo getting in you've got to apply RIGHT NOW!!! This will mean lots of phone calls and tours to find the right fit, then adding your kiddos name to a list with crossed fingers that they will call his lottery number. You won't know till March at the earliest and chances are slim at best so don't hold your breath. Next time pull your kiddo out in the fall and not 2 weeks away from every deadline out there. When planning your child's academic future, time is your friend.
- Finally figure out a rough idea of what your going to do for curriculum. Remember to be flexible even when it kills you!
- Sit back and enjoy your kiddo. Watch how he's already changing a lot of his attitudes and bad behaviors. Feel so lucky that you get to spend this time with him, this is time you will never get back. Tell yourself every night that you can do this! It's gunna be a-okay.
- Cry for a bit.
- Ponder. Regroup. Get back to work.

I certainly don't think homeschooling is for everyone, but I can't imagine any other way for our family. And just to give you peace of mind, it is a CONSTANTLY evolving process -- don't expect yourself to have all the answers at once. You'll be switching up what you do all the time and that's okay! In fact, that's the beauty of it!
I'm so so happy for you and your family! Loved getting your text the other day. :)
it went something like this...
