Have you had about all the trip recap you can stand? Well too bad folks, cause we still have 3 days left!
On Wednesday we decided that whatever we did, it would NOT include a lengthy drive. We were about 10 minutes away from Astoria, a little town right on the mouth of the Columbia River. We packed a lunch, loaded up and headed out to see what we could see.
The first thing we came to was this:

Astoria is the last stop of the Lewis and Clark trail. They built a fort to spend the winter and called it Fort Clatsop after the Clatsop Indians that lived in the area. The Forest Service has turned the whole area into a replica of the original fort which was really cool.

This is us hanging with our gal Sacagewea. Contrary to popular pronunciation, her name is not Sa-ka-ja-wea, but rather Sa-ca-ga-wa. She was quite the woman. Lewis and Clark would have had a bunch more trouble if it wasn't for her.

Hiding in the rain barrel/rain collection place. Fascinating fact: Did you know that Lewis and Clark spent 4 months in this fort and it rained every single day but 2? It did not sound like they enjoyed their stay at Fort Clatsop.

One of the many boardwalks that went all over the park. Very pretty. (and very slippery!)

One of the places the many boardwalks ended. This is one of the the springs where Lewis and Clark got their drinking water. You'd think that with 4 months of solid rain, they could just stick their cups outside and let them fill up, but apperantly this was not the case.

A wicked cool action shot of Tanner running with he stroller.
Note: no Lucy's were harmed in the making of this shot.

The man in blue is a great great grandson or either Lewis or Clark. He was following their entire journey and this was his last stop. He was really emotional and kinda fun to listen to. The guy in t brown is one of the workers. They dress up like Lewis and Clark, telling stories and demonstrating how 19 century life was like.

One of the above mentioned demonstrations, learning how to light a fire with flint and steel.

The part of the Columbia River were the Clatsop Indians and Lewis and Clark kept their canoes.
So peaceful and serene.
We spent most of the day wondering around looking at all things Lewis and Clark, and then headed into Astoria to check out their famous bridge. It spans the mouth of the Columbia and it is HUGE! It starts out medium, then goes down right to the water, then spikes up way high near the Washington side. My kids thought it was way better than any roller coaster.

Back at our little beach house we had spaghetti and meatballs, then headed over to the beach. We were about a block from the beach and when we weren't exploring, we were hanging out there.

Awww... aren't we so cute. Can you believe we took this ourselves?

Our own private beach.

Kent spent much of his beach time looking out into the waves and pondering the meaning of life.
I spent much of my beach time holding Lucy; (she is not a fan of waves. Truth be told, she is kinda a wimpy kid when it comes to new things like waves and bridges and starfish,) and I loved watching these guys have the time of their lives.
Fabulous. 3 Comments:
